American Wooden Canteen

 

This is an example of a Colonial American canteen and measures 7.25 inches wide.  This was not the preferred shape of canteen for a soldier to carry as the shape can make that akward, though with most necessities for war in short supply at the time, might have been taken from home to see field use.  For source and more details, click here.
