From a little reading (on wikipedia, so taken not as a fully-vetted source) I came across the same, that from 1770 on generally each regiment had a light infantry company (although each company had a varying degree of training). The inspiration supposedly came from the Ticonderoga campaign of 1758 and observation of battle tactics of the American Woodland Nations. Pretty cool
