It is known that prominent figures from the Revolution, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, died with rather larger personal debts. While as local and international heroes they could have virtually anything they needed and been able to visit anywhere within reason they so pleased, they also amassed large debts.
Benjamin Franklin was equally prominent and on the other side of things, having amassed a fair amount of wealth from his many endeavors throughout life (and his philosophy summarized in his The Way to Wealth published piece.
