During the American Revolution many local state militia units were created to help defend the rights of the colonies. The Philadelphia Brigade of Militia (Associated Regiment of Foot of Philadelphia/Associators of the City and Liberties of Philadelphia) (1747), a militia unit from Pennsylvania, fought in support of the American cause.
